Spiritual hygiene is important, much like personal hygiene. And hey, I’ll be the first to admit, barriers to both personal and spiritual hygiene exist. This is a judgment free zone. That said, taking care of your spiritual health through proper hygienic practices matters. Every ounce of effort you set forth towards spiritual wellness is worth it. So, let’s dive into it.
What is Spiritual Hygiene?
Spiritual hygiene is similar to personal hygiene. Just as we clean our bodies as an act of self-care, we can also take care of our spiritual health through self care and cleansing practices—which ought to leave you feeling refreshed & rejuvenated. It was truly an ‘aha’ moment of self-discovery for me, when I learned that I needed to cleanse my energy just as much as I need to clean my body or even tidy my surroundings. Once I started taking care of my spiritual hygiene in this way, I truly elevated my ability to serve others as a spiritual professional.
In one of our monthly Spiritual Professionals Association member meetings we discussed the topic of Spiritual Hygiene and we collectively created this list of ways for people to practice Spiritual Hygiene.
Let’s demystify spiritual hygiene with these 15 surprisingly practical ways you can take care of your spiritual health.
1. Ground, Center, and Release
People tend to pick up excess energy. It happens to all of us. Grounding and centering can help you release the excess energy and give you a more centered experience. Meditation, mindfulness, breath work, yoga, exercise, visualization, energy healing, and other energetic modalities can help you ground and center to release those excess energies.
2. Shield & protect yourself from unwanted energy
Shielding yourself, and protecting your energy, goes a long way in spiritual health. It’s simply good spiritual hygiene practice to do so. Prevention is more effective than treatment. You can use crystals, set intentions, practice rituals consistent with your spiritual beliefs, pray, and more, to help you in this journey. Remember to be compassionate, after all, practice makes progress. So, meet yourself where you are and give yourself plenty of wiggle room. It’s okay if you’re not perfect at energetic protection. It takes practice, you've got this!
3. Recognize that your spirit is connected to your mind and body
This deceptively simple concept was mind blowing to me when I finally integrated the mind-body-spirit connection into my practices. In taking care of your mental health and physical health, you take care of your spiritual health too. Don’t neglect one in favor of the other, it’s all about the balance.
4. Align yourself to your priorities and values
Living in alignment with your priorities and values is a real game changer. It might sound cliche, but it’s true. When your actions are aligned with what you value and find important, you will find ease entering your life. It may not be easy, at first, but it’s worth it. Because the more you say no to something you prioritize and value, the more your sense of integrity crumbles. Additionally, when you are living in Authenticity and Integrity, you will attract more people who are also living authentic lives of integrity.
5. Maintain healthy boundaries with others
As empathic people doing work that is focused on helping others, we can tend to be "people pleasers” who want to say yes every time we are asked for help, time, service, and energy. We must therefore recognize our own limitations and set boundaries to protect our energy and time to avoid burnout, and this means holding firm boundaries around the use of our time and energy. Additionally, we cannot help everyone or solve every problem, so learning to say “no” or delegate tasks to others is another way we hold healthy boundaries.
6. Treat yourself to some well-deserved pampering
As simple as it sounds, some pampering and relaxation will go a long way in helping you to release the tension that can accumulate with Spiritual Work. The definition of Pampering is to indulge with every attention, comfort, and kindness; to spoil and provide care beyond what is necessary or expected. If you can afford it, go get a massage or a manicure, get your hair cut or get a facial. If it is outside of your budget to get these services, you can try some pampering at home by giving yourself a manicure or facial, taking a soothing bubble bath, or trying some aromatherapy and sound therapy and meditation in your own home. There are many ways to pamper yourself – it is any act that helps you feel soothed and special, like you are treating yourself to a special treat just for your own enjoyment!
7. Maintain Consistent Personal Spiritual Routines
What kind of Personal Spiritual Practice do you have? There is power in having a consistent and regular routine for your own personal spiritual practices. This can consist of doing your own weekly or daily readings with your chosen divination tool and taking time to journal and write down your readings. Or perhaps your routine involves having a monthly moon ritual with the Full Moon, or a weekly energy reset with crystals and incense. For some people your personal practice might be daily yoga and meditation; whatever it is and how frequent it is are fully up to you; the key here is that you are being consistent and prioritizing time for your own spirituality.
8. Practice what you preach
Our clients will often serve as a mirror into our own psyche. If you find yourself often giving the advice to your client that they should meditate more, then you should also take this advice yourself. If you find yourself advising a client to find a better balance between work and their personal relationships, then you may look and see if you can implement this advice into your own life. You will avoid feeling like a hypocrite by giving advice that you are willing to follow, and you will also benefit and be able to give even better advice because you have personally experienced the benefit of listening to your own teachings
9. Avoid spiritual bypassing
“Spiritual Bypassing” is the use of Spiritual Practices as a method of avoiding dealing with Trauma or unresolved pain. Spiritual Practices can feel good, and sometimes we can get trapped in cycles of avoidance and escapism by just using these Spiritual Practices to access those good feelings while avoiding doing our own healing or confronting our trauma. True healing will be messy and sometimes painful; trust in your ability to do the hard work of healing. Notice if you are avoiding your Shadow Work or using Spirituality to repress or escape from the uncomfortable processes of emotional healing.
10. Take regular breaks from technology & social media
We are all prone to information overload and decision fatigue in these days when the internet and social media are available to us on multiple devices around us at any given moment. Even as I sit here writing this I have multiple tabs open on my computer screen and my smart phone is sitting right next to me. We do need to stay connected and stay informed, and our technology and social media allow us to do this; but they also contribute to mental and emotional fatigue, compassion fatigue, information overload, and other mental and physical health impacts. Take a break, schedule some time to disconnect on a regular basis. One to two days a month with no social media and limited technology can really do wonders in helping you reconnect with your spirit, recharge your energy, and re-evaluate your priorities.
11. Consume uplifting content
While we cannot stay disconnected from Social Media and Technology all the time, we can easily become overwhelmed by all the bad news or the stress of current events. You can intentionally add some uplifting content to the menu of what you are taking in on a regular basis. Turn on a playlist of some of your favorite uplifting or upbeat music, watch some cute cat videos or a favorite comedian. Check in with friends and ask them to tell you about something positive in their life, or even specifically search for positive headlines and happy news. I have a couple funny YouTube channels that I like to watch for some light-hearted laughs and a happy distraction. You can think of the content you consume online in the same way you think about the food you consume. You can choose to add in some healthy foods to your diet, and the same goes for the type of media we consume. If all that you consume is stressful and negative, this will begin to impact your energy, mental health, and spiritual wellbeing.
12. Respect your own Time – find a good balance between Work and Personal Life
As Spiritual Advisors and Healers, many of us set our own schedules and hours. We want to be available to serve our clients when they need us and we might have a highly flexible or open schedule as we wish to fill our calendars with healing sessions and readings. For some of us, we work a scheduled mundane job and we just do readings on our time off, as a hobby or to supplement our income or serve our community. In both of these situations it can be difficult to prioritize our time off or time for personal pursuits outside of the Spiritual Services. We can easily fill up our calendars with clients, classes, workshops, and rituals, leaving the bare minimum to take care of our homes and spend time with our family or loved ones. This will eventually lead to us feeling drained, unfulfilled, and at risk of burnout. We must remember to prioritize time off, and to leave room in our schedules for rest, family time, dates, fun, or even just “down time” when we have nothing scheduled.
13. Spend time in nature
Get outside in some fresh air to help reset your energy and let nature help you with some Spiritual Hygiene. Taking a walk, visiting a local park, gardening, or even just sitting on your own back patio can really work wonders on your spiritual energy and mental health. “Go Touch Grass” and ground yourself in the physical natural world to help disconnect from stress and reset your energy.
14. Tidy up your environment
As Spiritual Advisors and Healers, we work a lot with the flow of energy. Our physical environment will have a strong influence on how energy moves and flows around us. Having a clean and organized home space and work environment can really help us to be more grounded and effectively release energies to maintain our spiritual hygiene. Piles of clutter and disorganization can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety. Your environment doesn’t need to be perfect, but a little bit of cleaning and tidying your space can really help you clear and cleanse your own personal spiritual energy more effectively.
15. Get professional spiritual services from others
Doctors need to see other doctors, and Therapists need to see other Therapists. The same is true for Spiritual Advisors and Energy Healers; we need the services of others who work in the same field as us. Purchase tarot readings from other tarot readers, or Reiki Services from other Energy Workers. You will be getting yourself a service that you really need, and you will be contributing to the success of someone else’s small business at the same time! While you can occasionally do readings or energy work on yourself, sometimes you need the support of someone else, and they might be able to see something that you could not see in your own Shadow.
